An old lady from khu nu gave a dog to the king of Mandi once. The king was delighted by the gift and gave the lady a small plot of land near mtsho pad ma lake in Himachal Pradesh. The old constructed a ma ni temple at the place and people named it mti pni. With the support of gar zhar dorje dngos grub and Ladakhi lama blo bzang, the temple was offered to skyabs rje bdud ’joms ’jigs bral ye shes rdorje, it was named ao rgyan he ruka’i pho brang. In 1956, on the occasion of Buddha’s 2500 death anniversary, the Dalai Lama and Penchen Lama were invited by the India government and they also visited the temple. They consecrated the temple and planted a Bodhi tree at the vicinity.
As per the wish of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, at every 10th day of monkey month and monkey year, the great ao rgyan guru sadhana or practice and lama dance feast offering are performed. As per the order of grub dbang pad ma nor burin po che, based on the monastic discipline, mgo log lama chos skyabs had been the director of the monastery and also been the abbot of summer retreat. Today, there are 9 monks from different places like Tibet, Spiti and Ladakh.
